Dry Needling

  • What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling (also referred to as MDN - Myofascial Dry Needling) is a treatment technique, which uses acupuncture-type needles to release tension in muscles with the goal of permanently reducing muscle pain and dysfunction.

We use MDN to effectively treat acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

    What will it feel like?

The needles used are very thin, and you may or may not feel the needle enter your skin.

If the target muscle is shortened and supersensitive you will most likely feel a twitch sensation (that’s a good thing!).

This is very short-lasting, and patients soon learn to recognise this sensation as therapeutic as it is followed by a feeling of pain relief and muscle relaxation.

Can I have Dry Needling during pregnancy?

We will never dry needle someone during their first trimester of pregnancy!

There are some situations in which we will consider dry needling someone after this time, however there are certain points we will avoid as an extra safety measure.

If you are unsure or have any questions feel free to discuss this with your practitioner directly.

  • Benefits of Dry Needling:

There are a number of proposed benefits of dry needling and the research into this form of treatment clearly proves it!

Dry needling aims to reduce central sensitisation, also known as the central nervous system’s hypersensitivity to pain, reduce local and referred pain, improve muscle activation patterns leading to improved range of motion and can also result in chemical alterations around myofascial trigger points.

These trigger points can occur from unaccustomed muscle loading as well low-load repetitive tasks and sustained postures such as sitting at a desk at work!

    In short:

If you have been struggling with pain and limited mobility, Dry Needling could offer you relief and help improve your recovery from a wide range of musculoskeletal pain and associated conditions, such as:

    Back pain

    Neck and shoulder pain

    Headache management

    Sports injuries

    Rotator cuff problems

    Tennis elbow / Golfers elbow

    Occupational injuries

Achilles tendinopathy and other ankle injuries

    Plantar Fasciitis

    TMJ pain

    and many more…
